Valerie Tan

Clinical Psychologist and Director

Valerie is one of the three directors of Dunedin Psychology.

Valerie studied at the University of Otago and graduated with a PhD (Neuroscience & Psychology) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Psychology. She enjoys working with adults from a wide range of backgrounds and cultures, helping people build meaningful lives that align with their values. Her areas of practice include depression and anxiety, adjustment to life changes, chronic pain, and emotion regulation.

Valerie draws on a range of evidence-based approaches, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and mindfulness. She places great importance on developing a warm, collaborative therapeutic relationship and working alongside clients to develop individualised goals and treatment plans.

Valerie has a particular interest in pharmacopsychology—the intersection between psychological processes and psychotropic medication use. Her work focuses on helping people make informed decisions about antidepressants by understanding both their potential benefits and their potential challenges within the context of each person's circumstances, values and goals.
